Chapter 10

Ally did her best to prepare some chocolates for a big order due the next day, but she found it hard to concentrate. When her cell phone rang, she lunged for it and answered immediately.

“Is he going to be okay, Mee-Maw?” Her heart pounded as she waited for the answer.

“I’m not sure yet, Ally. I do know that Dr. Blake is going to do everything she can to help him. He has to stay overnight for observation.” Charlotte sighed.

“Oh Mee-Maw, you sound exhausted.” Ally winced.

“I’ll be all right, Ally. I’ll be better once Arnold is home. We need to put our heads together and figure this out.” Charlotte explained about the paper stuck to Arnold’s hoof.

“You’re right. The paper is interesting, but how would he get that on his hoof?”

“I’m not sure. My best guess is that it was on the ground near the shed.”

“Maybe. I must have missed it when I cleaned Peaches and Arnold. I really just washed his face and body. I was going to give him a proper bath outside when I had more time.”

“I’m not sure that it will have anything to do with the investigation, but I kept it, just in case it might lead to something. Ally, I’m terribly worried about Arnold.”

“So am I.” Ally released a heavy sigh. “I wish there was something I could do.”

“If we don’t find out what poison Arnold might have ingested, then he might not get better.” Charlotte’s voice wavered. “Dr. Blake tried to sound positive, but I could tell that she was very concerned. I just don’t know what to do.”

“Try not to worry too much, Mee-Maw. I know how much you love Arnold, I love him, too. He’s strong, and he will get through this.” Ally’s heart fluttered, she hoped that was the case. She had no way of knowing if Arnold would improve or not.

“I’m trying. Dr. Blake said that if we knew what kind of poison was used, she might have a better chance of helping him. I wish Luke was working the case, I know he would do whatever he could to find out that information for us.” Charlotte huffed. “I’m guessing that Detective Pauler would not be the least bit interested in the well-being of a pig.”

“I doubt it.” Ally frowned as she recalled the generally indifferent detective. “You should go home, Mee-Maw, I can handle the shop.”

“No, I’d rather be there. I need to have something to do, something to keep me busy. I’ll see if Jeff will stay with me, he’s good at keeping me calm.” Charlotte took a breath, then cleared her throat. “Ally, I don’t often get scared, but this time I am. I’m sorry, I want to be strong for you, but every time I think of Arnold, I just want to cry.”

“It’s okay, Mee-Maw. You don’t have to be strong for me. We’re going to figure this out.”

Ally ended the call and did a search on her phone to see if there was any more news about the murder.
